Captain Harold
"Digger" Daigh, USMC(Ret) is a native of California and
will speak on "Yaks
versus Corsairs". He was a participant in the only daylight
propeller versus propeller aerial
combat during the Korean War.
He currently
lives in Rolling Hills Estates with his wife Dorothy where they
have raised five
sons. He is the owner of "Harold Daigh Engineering" in
which he specializes as a forensic
automotive engineer expert witness for attorneys and insurance companies
in accident cases
involving automobiles, motorcycles, trucks, airplanes, and other
vehicles.
As a lifetime
"Hot Rodder", he started as a mechanic for his father
who operated Daigh's Garage
in Long Beach from 1924 to 1956. His experience included setting
a record for roadsters at the
"Dry Lakes". He has served as a mechanic for three Indy
500 winners and as a co-driver with the
late Steve McQueen in the Baja 1000 Road Race.
Capt Daigh joined
the Navy V-5 Program in 1942 and received his commission and wings
in
the Marine Corps in 1944. He took his operational training in VF-4
at Jacksonville, Florida in
Corsairs and later became an air-to-air gunnery instructor. In September
of 1944, he was
transferred to "Bloody Barin Field" in Pensacola, Florida
where he continued instructing. In
October of 1946 he was separated and joined VMF-241 at Los Alamitos,
California in 1947 as a
"Weekend Warrior" until August of 1950 when VMF-312 was
called but that is a different story
and the subject of his talk.
